Newark – Just before 2;00 this afternoon, firefighters and ambulance crews from the Christiana Fire Company, along with crews from Aetna, Hose, Hook, and Ladder and Wilmington Manor responded to the I-95 service center for reports of bus passengers feeling sick.
As crews were responding to the scene they learned that the bus was full of students. Crews reportedly evaluated several students that had been on the bus, four of which, were expected to be transported. They all later refused transport.
Earlier in the day, around noon, a bus carrying the same students caught fire on the New Jersey Turnpike, near in Runnemede, NJ, causing long delays in the Turnpike in South New Jersey.
The students, returning home from New York City, are from the Visual and Performing Arts program at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, MD.
Reports from the scene indicate that no one was injured in the fire but many students lost personal items, including their musical instruments.
Andrea Hair, of Baltimore, along with her friends and family were parked at the service center wondering what was going on with kids. We passed the bus earlier on the Turnpike, said Hair. The bus was destroyed by the fire.
The students are now making their way back Hyattsville.
