Dover – The Dover Police Department is investigating a fatal motor vehicle accident where a pedestrian was struck on Sunday night, according to M/Cpl. Mark Hoffman, Public Information Officer.
Hoffman said at approximately 6:57 pm, Brenda Beckner, 60, was crossing US Route 13 from east to west against the pedestrian signal with her service dog across the roadway.
As Beckner continued to cross against the signal, a 2003 Subaru Outback operated by Edward Husbands, 47, of Milton was traveling southbound on US Route 13, approaching Townsend Blvd. Beckner was struck by the Outback and sustained fatal injuries as a result, according to Hoffman.
Hoffman said husbands continued southbound from the scene after failing to stop immediately after striking Beckner. Husbands was followed by a witness who alerted police, via phone, and Husbands eventually stopped in the parking lot of Royal Farms located at 295 S. DuPont Highway in Dover, approximately 1.5 miles from the accident scene.
Husbands was taken into custody without incident and was released after being questioned about the incident. Charges are pending further investigation and review of the incident.
The service dog was checked out at area vet and released to the woman’s roommate afterwards, according to Hoffman.
