Bus Carrying New York Middle School Students Evacuated On I-95 In Newark

Newark –  Just after 3:15 this afternoon a bus carrying a group of New York middle school students caught fire, causing the driver to pull over and evacuate the bus on I-95, near the Maryland border.

The bus, one of two charter buses carrying students from Mahopac Middle School in Mahopac, NY, lost a tire and caught fire, according to early reports from the scene.

Both buses pulled over just west of the Otts Chapel Road overpass, where the students, drivers and chaperones evacuated from the buses. Firefighters from Elkton’s Singerly Fire Company and Newark’s Aetna, Hose, Hook, and Ladder arrived within minutes and brought the incident under control.

Students that were on the damaged bus were transported from the scene via a replacement bus.

Traffic was restricted to one lane while crews worked the scene.

No injuries were reported.
