Elsmere-Area – Delaware State Police are investigating a serious crash on Kirkwood Highway just outside Elsmere that has sent three people to the hospital, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Michael Austin.
Austin said the incident occurred at approximately 2:28 p.m., Monday, April 30, 2018, on Kirkwood Highway (DE Rt. 2) eastbound, in the area of N. Woodward Avenue, Wilmington. A 2014 Hyundai Sonata operated by Maggie Blackshear, 78, of New Castle, proceeded from N. Woodward Avenue, across the westbound lanes of Kirkwood Highway and continued into the eastbound lanes by using a crossover marked For Official Use Only.
The front right of the Hyundai then struck the front left of a 2006 Ford 500, driven by an 18-year-old Wilmington man, that was traveling eastbound on Kirkwood Highway.
After the initial impact the Ford struck a utility pole before coming to rest adjacent to a business located at 2714 Kirkwood Highway. The vehicle did not strike the building.
The operator of the Ford had to be extricated from the vehicle by emergency crews prior to being transported to the Christiana Hospital by Delaware State Police Helicopter Trooper 4, with serious injuries.
Blackshear along with an 81-year-old male passenger in her vehicle were transported to the Christiana Hospital with undisclosed minor injuries.
All parties were properly restrained at the time of the collision and neither drugs nor alcohol are factors in the crash.
Blackshear was cited for Driving Across a Median and Failure to Yield Right of Way.
Kirkwood Highway eastbound was closed for approximately 2 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

Breaking Report
Elsmere-Area – Recuse are responding to the 2000 block of Kirkwood Highway, just north of Route 141 for reports of a motor vehicle crash with multiple injuries.
Upon arrival, Command is reporting that one patient is heavily trapped.
Crews are working to remove the patients from the vehicle.
Trooper 4 (Delaware State Police Aviation) is en route.
Traffic is backing up on Route 141 NB due to the road closure.
Update: 2:49 Two patients will be transported by ground, Third patient still trapped:

Update: 3:09 Medics have made contact with the patient.
Update: 3:11 Medics are reporting that it may take another 15 minutes to extricate the patient.

Update: 3:43 Trooper 4 transported the third patient.
Update: 4;10 The accident is about to clear toe trucks loading two cars onto flatbeds.
