Newport – Just after 4:40, Tuesday afternoon, a man riding his motorcycle was involved in a crash on Route 141. The man, who has not officially been identified, became separated from his bike during the accident that would leave him in critical condition.
As the accident occurred several passing motorists stopped on the highway, to help the seriously injured man. One of those Good Samaritans was school bus driver, Fred Latham.
Latham, who had just dropped off his last student 15 minutes prior, was on his way to pick up a group athletes when he came across the accident.
Latham said, “The bike was already upside down, and he was laying on the ground a few feet away when I pulled up to the scene.”
As Latham and the others were helping the rider, New Castle County Paramedics (NCCP) and personnel from the Minquas and Elsmere Fire Companies were dispatched to the scene. The first crews arrived within minutes and immediately began life-saving efforts.
Arriving County Paramedics found the 43-year-old patient, who was wearing a helmet, suffering from serious injuries to the head, face, abdomen, pelvis, and leg.
As County Paramedics worked to stabilize the patient. Trooper 4 (Delaware State Police Aviation), who was already on the way to the accident, requested that fire police stop traffic in both directions on Route 141. The pilot then landed the helicopter in the northbound lanes of Route 141, less than a hundred yards from the accident scene.
After being stabilized he was transported to the Emergency Department at Christiana Hospital on board Trooper 4 with a New Castle County Paramedic accompanying.
The patient was in very serious condition at the time of transport.
The motorcycle rider has not been officially identified but reports indicate that he is a Sergeant with the Delaware Department of Corrections.
Route 141 northbound remained closed for almost three hours while the Newport Police Department investigated the crash.
