Just after 4:00 Saturday afternoon, Wilmington Firefighters on the B platoon were alerted for a multi-residential structure fire at 1 S. Broom Street. First arriving Battalion Chief Michael Schaal reported heavy smoke showing from a 3 story apartment building over top a convenience store.
Arriving engine companies quickly deployed hose lines and began an aggressive interior attack on the first-floor apartment fire. Additional crews from Squad 4 and Ladder 2 simultaneously search the fire apartment and the remaining apartments to ensure all residents had escaped the fire. Crews were able to contain the fire to the apartment of origin. The incident commander, Battalion Chief Michael Schaal placed the incident under control at 4:52 PM.
There was no reported firefighter or civilian injuries. The Wilmington Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the origin and cause of the fire, according to Public Information Officer Battalion Chief John M. Looney. Wilmington Licenses and Inspection has determined the apartment of origin to be uninhabitable.
