Georgetown – The Delaware State Police are investigating a serious crash involving a pedestrian that occurred last evening, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Melissa Jaffe.
Jaffe said the incident occurred on Sunday, July 22, 2018, at approximately 9:16 p.m. as a GMC work van was traveling westbound on County Seat Highway (US 9) approaching Tyndall Road. For unknown reasons, a pedestrian was walking in the westbound lane just east of Tyndall Road.
As a result, the front of the van struck the pedestrian, said Jaffe. The van continued westbound on US 9 without stopping. A witness who was behind the van, called 911 to report the collision and provided a brief description of the vehicle, according to Jaffe. A Trooper was on patrol in the area and observed a vehicle matching the description traveling on Taylor Mill Road. A traffic stop was initiated and damage was observed to the front of the vehicle, connecting it to the collision involving the pedestrian, said Jaffe.
The pedestrian, a 30-year-old man from Milford, sustained critical injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. He was later transferred to the Christiana Hospital.
The operator of the van, a 25-year-old man from Salisbury, Maryland was found to be driving without a license. He was transported to Troop 4 where he was charged with Driving Without a License, Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Collision, and Failure to Report a Personal Injury Collision. He was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $2,001.00 cash only bond.
The roadway was closed for approximately 3 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
