Newark – In a post on State Senator Bryan Townsend’s Facebook page, former Newark Mayor, Vance Funk, blasted DelDOT and Newark legislators over a road construction project planned for Main Street.
Funk’s comments came in response to Townsend’s posting of a news article regarding the project. Funk said, “Get serious, DelDot is going to destroy Main Street and the NewArk legislators let us down!”
The work, a two years project, will impact local businesses along the normally bustling heart of the city. In the news article that Townsend posted many of the downtown Newark business owners voiced their concerns over the project which is expected to begin later this year.
Responding to Funk’s post, Townsend asked the Mayor to send him an email discussing what the State could do differently.
Funk responded by saying “need to change to a nighttime project…”, adding “Of course, the City screwed up and a 3 month 2017 project ended up being an 18 Month 2018 project.”
The proposed improvements for this project will take place on East Main Street/Newark Christiana Road from Marrows Road to West Main Street – Elkton Road
The existing pavement is in poor condition, the corridor requires ADA improvements to meet current requirements and it is being considered to incorporate curb extensions and improve parking entrances along Main Street.
The scope of work for this project includes the replacement of the existing bituminous concrete pavement, pcc curb, sidewalk, drainage improvements, signal upgrades, curb extensions, pavement markings, and signage.
Construction is anticipated to begin in October/November 2018 and Construction is anticipated to be completed by Summer of 2020
