New Castle – Just after 7:00 this morning rescue crews from the Goodwill and Delaware City Fire Companies were alerted to a school bus that was stalled in flood waters on River Road, just north of Carroll Drive.
Upon arrival, crews reported that the Colonial School District bus was occupied by approximately 30 students and the bus driver. That number later rose to 45 when district officials released more details.
The driver of the bus, bound for William Penn High School, drove through water on the northbound side of River Road, disabling the bus, according to district officials.
Water rescue crews worked for about an hour to safely remove all of the students, along with four other people from two additional vehicles.
There were no injuries, and at no time did water get into the disabled bus, according to officials with the district.
Officers with the New Castle City Police ticketed the driver and Colonial’s Human Resources Division will review the incident and take appropriate action, said officials.
DelDOT crews and local Fire Police have closed the roadway.
