Authorities Update Crash That Shut Down Route 13 This Morning

At approximately 6:40 this morning, New Castle County Paramedics and surrounding fire departments were dispatched to the intersection of South Dupont Highway and Port Penn Road for a motor vehicle crash, according to Paramedic First Class Yvonne Russell.

Russell said upon arrival, New Castle County Paramedics found one patient, a 25-year-old male, needing advanced life support care. The patient serious suffered injuries to his face.  Russell said the patient was treated on scene and transported to Christiana Hospital via Port Penn Fire Company ambulance, accompanied by New Castle County Paramedics. It’s believed that a medic from the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit (Trooper 4) was also onboard the ambulance.

Reports from the scene indicate that the driver was driving southbound on Route 13 and may have fallen asleep before crossing over into the northbound lanes. Those early reports have not been confirmed.

The patient was in serious condition at the time of transport.

Delaware State Police is investigating the crash.

Breaking Report

Middletown – Rescue crews have responded to Route 13 NB at Port Penn Road for reports of a vehicle accident with entrapment.

Upon arrival, crews have reported that the patient is no trapped.

Command has asked for Fire Police respond to the scene to shut down Route 13 NB.

Trooper 4 has landed nearby.

Reports from the scene indicate that this is a head-on collision. One patient is seriously injured an is en route to the trauma center via ground ambulance with Trooper 4’s media onboard.
