It’s been a great Market so far this season, and this Saturday, May 18, the fun and good food continues. The Historic Lewes Farmers Market opens at 8 am at George H.P. Smith Park (Johnson and DuPont Avenues) with 35 vendors will be bringing juicy strawberries, freshly-cut asparagus, lettuces and greens including mini-romaines, baby kale, Bok Choi, arugula, Swiss chard, spinach, salad and stir fry mixes, and Tatsoi. Customers will also find a great selection of eggs, milk, butter, grass-fed lamb, pork, beef, chicken, mushrooms, honey, herbs, and more.
The HLFM will continue its partnership with the Lewes Public Library. This year, Children’s Story Time will begin on June 1 at 9 am.
At 10 am, this Saturday, friends from Lewes in Bloom will demonstrate an Italian Herb Garden based on the types of herbs typically found in Italian cooking. They will also hand out numbered raffle tickets and the pot will be raffled off at the end of the demonstration. Lewes in Bloom volunteers are responsible for all the lovely plantings in parks and planters all over the City of Lewes, including the Children’s Learning Garden at Stango Park and the Butterfly Garden at George H.P. Smith Park. The nonprofit has recently won a major gardening award in Canada and was asked to plant a garden in Italy, bringing the beauty of Lewes to an international level. Visitors to the Market are invited to attend this free demo at the HLFM Demo Tent.
The Market continues its SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) program. To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to come to the SNAP tent at the Market to pick up the bonus $20 in tokens to use at the Market. WIC and SFMNP coupons will also be accepted at the market starting in June.
The Market is open every Saturday from 8 am to noon. Ample parking can be found at the Shields Elementary School and Lewes School Parking lots (intersection of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive), a short walk to the Market
In case of inclement weather, the Market moves to Shields Elementary School Parking lot.
The HLFM will help customers carry bags back to the school parking lots. This service is located at the HLFM Information Tent.
