Troopers: Armed Robber Uses App To Lure Lyft Driver

New Castle – The Delaware State Police are investigating the robbery of a Lyft driver that took place Thursday morning, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Michael Austin.

Austin said the incident occurred at approximately 9:45 a.m., Thursday, May 16, 2019, when a Lyft driver received a text message via the Lyft app to pick up a subject in the Penn Mart Shopping Center, located at 101 E. Basin Road, New Castle.

The female driver made contact with a male subject who confirmed that he requested the ride, at which time he entered into the rear seat of the vehicle. The driver proceeded to the requested destination and after turning on to W. Commons Blvd from E. Basin Road the subject asked her to pull over, advising that he would walk the rest of the way.

After pulling onto the shoulder the vehicle came to a stop, at which time the subject placed a sharp object to the driver’s neck and proceeded to rifle through her purse, said Austin. After removing an undisclosed amount of cash from the purse the subject fled on foot in an unknown direction. The victim was not injured as a result of the incident.

The suspect was described as a black male, 30-35 years of age, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses.
