Middletown – The Delaware State Police is currently investigating a serious crash involving multiple vehicles on SR-1 which occurred Friday afternoon, according to Director of Public Information, Sergeant Richard Bratz.
Bratz said the initial investigation has determined the incident occurred on Friday, June 21, 2019, at approximately 2:40 p.m. when a 2016 Jeep Wrangler, operated by a 52-year-old male of Pennsylvania, was traveling southbound in the left lane of SR-1. The operator of the Jeep was almost at a standstill due to the traffic conditions when a 2001 GMC Yukon, operated by a 76-year-old of Pennsylvania, was also in the left lane behind the Jeep. The Yukon was rear-ended by a 2018 Chevrolet Suburban, operated by a 51-year-old male of Pennsylvania, causing the GMC Yukon to become airborne, roll over, and then spin several times before striking the rear right side of the Jeep Wrangler, according to Bratz.
The 52-year-old driver of the Jeep Wrangler did not report any injuries.
The 76-year-old driver of the GMC Yukon sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the Christiana Hospital. His passenger, a 77-year-old female, sustained serious injuries and was transported by the DSP Aviation Unit to the Christiana Hospital.
The 51-year-old driver of the Suburban and his 57-year-old female passenger did not report any injuries. The driver advised the traffic stopped abruptly in front of him and he swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid a collision. This driver was issued a citation for Following a Motor Vehicle Too Closely.
The impact of the crash impacted traffic flow for several hours until the crash was investigated and cleared.
