Newark Apartment Fire Displaces Residents, Woman And Dog Rescued

Newark – Just after 11:00 a.m. Saturday January 7, 2017 Newark firefighters from Atena along with mutual aid from the Christiana Fire Department, Mill Creek Fire Company and the Cranston Heights Fire Company were dispatched to 46 Fairway Road, Newark in the Hunters Crossing Apartments for a building fire.

Arriving crews found smoke on both the 1st and 2nd floors. Firefighters quickly realized that an elderly victim, who was in a wheelchair, was in need of rescue on the 1st floor. The victim was removed from the building and was transported to Christiana Hospital, according to reports from the scene. Rescue crews were also able to safely remove a dog from the building.

Fire was located in the floor and walls of four apartments units. The fire  displaced several residents, who are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Additional rescue units responded from Belvedere Fire Company, Five Points Fire Company, Elsmere Fire Company, New Castle County Paramedics, and New Castle County Police Department.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating,
