Troopers Identify Pedestrian Killed In Claymont Crash

Claymont, Delaware – The Delaware State Police have identified the name of the pedestrian who was killed in a crash on Friday, August 9, 2019, on northbound Philadelphia Pike in the area of Princeton Avenue in Claymont, as Marc B. Wise, 47 of Claymont, Delaware.

Claymont – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian that occurred at approximately 2:57 a.m., Friday, August 9, 2019, on northbound Philadelphia Pike in the area of Princeton Avenue in Claymont.

The initial investigation has determined that a 47-year-old Claymont man, was a pedestrian who was walking northbound on the sidewalk in front of the Burger King, located at 2911 Philadelphia Pike.

The sidewalk is located to the west of the southbound lanes of Philadelphia Pike. A 2014 Chrysler 200, operated by an 18-year-old man, also from Claymont, was traveling northbound on Philadelphia Pike in the area of Princeton Avenue. For an undetermined reason, the Chrysler drifted to the left and traveled across the southbound lanes of Philadelphia Pike and then continued onto the sidewalk at which time it struck the pedestrian, according to Troopers. After being struck the pedestrian was thrown into a retaining wall located on the Burger King property, where he came to rest.

The Chrysler continued in a northerly direction traveling up an embankment which caused it to overturn. The Chrysler remained in motion, striking a utility pole and a second embankment at which time it went airborne before coming to rest on its left side in the parking lot of a business located at 2999 Philadelphia Pike.

The male pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification is pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the Chrysler was not injured. Speed is being considered as a contributing factor in the crash, State Police said.

The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian that occurred at approximately 2:57 a.m., Friday, August 9, 2019, on northbound Philadelphia Pike in the area of Commonwealth Blvd.in Claymont.

As a result of the crash, all lanes of Philadelphia Pike are closed between Commonwealth Blvd. and Harvey Road Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes of travel.

Initial reports from the scene indicate that a resident near the Burger King heard a noise ran outside and saw a person lying in the parking lot of the restaurant.

Upon their arrival, crews reported a vehicle on its side in a parking lot down the street from the Burger King.

As crews worked to evaluate the scene, Command reported that one person had succumbed at the scene and a second patient was being worked on.

As of 7:15 the roadway remains closed.
