Update: Newark School Bus Crash

Newark – There were 8 Shue-Medill Middle School students on board the bus that crashed this morning in Newark, according to Christina School District Public Information Officer, Wendy Lapham.

Lapham said that the accident occurred at 6:39 a.m. this morning, Wednesday, January 11, 2017,  in the Fairfield Estates neighborhood at Delram and Country Club Drive in Newark.

The bus slid on ice and collided with a tree, said Lapham.

All parents were notified of the accident by the districts transportation staff.

Three students and the bus driver were taken to Christiana Hospital for evaluation of possible injuries. Five students were transported to Shue-Medill Middle School.

Newark Police said that the school bus had slid off the roadway due to black ice and struck a tree. It was determined that a Christina School District bus was making a slow speed turn from Country Club Drive onto Windsor Drive when the rear of the bus fish-tailed on black ice and struck a tree.

The 8 children, ranging in age from 11-14 and the 54-year-old female bus driver were in the bus at the time of the collision. The bus driver and three children passengers were removed from the scene by Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company EMS for possible minor injuries. The remaining children boarded another bus and were bused to school.

No charges are being filed in this investigation, according to the Newark Police Department.

Newark – This morning, Wednesday, January 11, 2017 Wendy Laphama Christina School Bus reportedly hit black ice and slide head on into a tree, in the Fairfield neighborhood.

The accident happened at the intersection of Windsor Drive and Country Club Drive in Newark.  Neighbors on the scene said they awoke to a loud crashing noise.

An Aetna ambulance was seen leaving the accident without any emergency lights running.

Witnesses said that the 8 children on the bus received minor injuries and were transported away from the scene.
