Milford- The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred yesterday, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Melissa Jaffe.
Jaffe said the incident occurred on December 18, 2019, at approximately 5:40 p.m., when a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 was traveling westbound on Milford-Harrington Highway, west of Williamsville Road.
A pedestrian was attempting to cross Milford-Harrington Highway, towards a small strip mall/parking lot. The operator observed the pedestrian within the roadway and attempted to brake but was unable to avoid the collision. The front of the Dodge Ram struck the pedestrian, causing the pedestrian to be projected forward and come to rest on the pavement.
The operator of the Dodge Ram, a 19-year-old Harrington man, was properly restrained and remained on scene. He did not sustain and injuries.
The pedestrian, a 55-year-old Dover man, was not carrying a light or utilizing a designated crosswalk. He transported to the Sussex Bayheath Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. His name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of next of kin.
Milford-Harrington Highway, west of Williamsville Road was closed for approximately 3 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
