On Monday night the City of Dover selected their new police chief.
After seven months and 22 applications, Dover’s Mayor Robin Christiansen recommended Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, Police Captain Thomas Johnson to the City Council.
After a brief discussion, council members unanimously voted to approve Christiansen’s recommendation.
Johnson, a 24-year veteran of the Upper Darby Township Police Department, began as a patrol officer in mid-90s and worked his way up the chain of command. His current position has Johnson heading up the department’s detective division.
He has served on the command staff since 2011 and has just under 15 years of leadership experience at his department, according to the Mayor.
Johnson has also been a firefighter and a paramedic with the East Landsdowne Fire Department since the mid-80s.
The search for a new chief began in September when Chief Marvin Mailey retired after just over two years as Dover’s top cop.
Johnson, expected to take the reins of the agency in February, will be joining the Dover Police Department just as a wave of gun violence is making headlines.
