Georgetown – Georgetown Police have arrested two Delaware men after they allegedly committed an armed robbery in Georgetown, Delaware. The incident occurred this morning, February 7, 2017 at approximately 1:00 a.m, according to Public Information Officer Detective Joey Melvin.
Melvin said that at approximately 1:00 a.m., Georgetown Police responded to an assault complaint on Albury Avenue. Prior to arriving, Georgetown Police learned that two suspects, described as wearing black clothing and masks, had fled from the scene, said Melvin.
Responding officers saw two subjects that matched the suspect descriptions, in the area of E. Market Street, according to Melvin. Both suspects, who were wearing black clothing and masks, were taken into custody by Georgetown Police without incident, said Melvin. Officers recovered a black handgun from the area where both suspects were arrested.
The initial investigation revealed that the victim was walking on Albury Avenue in Georgetown, when two suspects wearing dark clothing and masks, approached the victim. The suspects produced a black in color handgun, and demanded money from the victim, according to Melvin.
Melvin said that after taking the victim’s wallet, one suspect struck the victim on the head with the handgun. The suspects then ordered the victim at gunpoint to walk into a nearby yard and forced the victim lay face down on the ground, said Melvin.
While lying on the ground, the victim was struck two more times on the head with the handgun before the suspects fled from the area, according to officials.
The victim received minor injuries from the incident, was treated on scene and released. Both suspects were transported to Georgetown Police Department where they were formally charged.
22-year-old Niles Mumford of Delmar, Delaware was arrested for Robbery 1st degree, Possession of a Firearm during the commission of a felony, Wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony, Possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, Tampering with evidence, and Conspiracy 2nd degree. Mumford was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in lieu of $150,00 bond.
22-year-old Marcel Matthews of Millsboro, Delaware was arrested for Robbery 1st degree, Possession of a Firearm during the commission of a felony, Wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony, Possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, Tampering with evidence, and Conspiracy 2nd degree. Matthews was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in lieu of $150,000 bond.
