The Delaware Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating this morning’s fire in Wilmington that heavily damaged three condominium buildings. One person was found deceased inside one of the units, according to Assistant State Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio.
Chionchio said the blaze, reported shortly before 3:00 am, occurred at the Mermaid Run Condominiums in the 5000 block of West Brigantine Court in the Pike Creek area. The Mill Creek Fire Company arrived on the scene with flames shooting from the three-story building. Firefighters discovered one person deceased inside the building.
State fire investigators are currently on the scene searching for the fire’s origin and cause. The Delaware Division of Forensic Science came out to the scene and took custody of the victim. Three buildings, housing 6 units each, were damaged. Approximately 30 or more residents have been displaced.
Heavy fire damage was estimated to exceed $1,000,000. The American Red Cross responded to the scene and are assisting those residents that have been displaced by the fire. There were no other reported injuries. This fire remains under investigation.
