Delaware Inmate Serving 372 Year Sentence Dies

The Delaware Department of Correction (DOC) today announced that Manuel Nieves, a 66-year-old inmate from James T. Vaughn Correctional Center, died at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus on July 26.

Nieves, who had been housed in the prison infirmary for monitoring and care of multiple serious and chronic health conditions, experienced sudden respiratory failure and medical staff immediately initiated lifesaving measures. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Paramedics were dispatched and continued lifesaving measures upon arrival and during transport to a local hospital. Nieves was pronounced dead by Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus staff at 5:20 p.m. on July 26.

Nieves, of Edgemoor, has been in DOC custody since 2001 and was serving a 372-year sentence for Rape, Unlawful Sexual Contact, and Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Child. His body was released to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science to determine cause of death.
