Just before 1:30, Saturday morning rescue crews responded to the area of the administration building on the Delaware State University (DSU) Campus in Dover for reports of a shooting.
Initial reports from the scene indicate that four people were transported to an area hospital suffering from gunshot wounds. Although a message was sent through the DSU alert system that stated that the incident also involved a robbery, officials did not release details regarding the incident.
We reached out to the Dover Police and to DSU this morning. The Dover Police Department said they responded to Delaware State University at 1:18 a.m. to assist with a shooting that had occurred on campus.
FSU has learned that at least one Dover officer rendered first aid to at least one of the victims prior to the rescue crew’s arrival. Dover Police Master Corporal Ryan Schmid said he does not know how many officers from Dover were involved, or the extent of their involvement at this time.
DSU responded with the following letter that was sent to students and staff. Details regarding the victims, their injuries, and conditions were not forthcoming.
“To the University Community:
Early this morning, an incident occurred on campus during which two Delaware State University students were injured. Those students were taken to the hospital for further treatment. University police and local law enforcement are investigating the crime.
First, let me say that my thoughts this morning are with the students and families as well as any other members of our University community affected by this moment.
At Delaware State University, we are a family. An event that affects the safety of one of us affects all of us. When moments like these emerge, they are understandably fraught with anxiety and indignation.
I share your feelings, and, at the same time, I can assure students and families that the University is committed to creating and maintaining a safe campus environment.
We will pursue justice in this matter. Our commitment to ourselves and each other leads us to respond to any challenge made against our collective and individual senses of security.
On Tuesday, September 6, we will hold a Forum to provide any updates and make sure all of your voices are heard.
For today, please join me in prayer, and if you were planning to join us for the football home opener against Lincoln, come together in solidarity as we cheer on our student-athletes, coaches, and staff. Let’s honor their hard work, effort, and excellence.
For the safety of the entire University community, you will notice additional security at all home games. At Delaware State University, we continue “to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.” And that will never change.”
