The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that this morning’s building fire in Newark, DE was Arson, according to Delaware State Fire Marshal Chief Deputy Robert Fox.
Fox said ihe Aetna Hose Hook and Ladder Company of Newark responded to the Red Roof Inn located at 1119 South College Avenue this morning shortly before 8 AM. Upon arrival, Firefighters found a fire in one of the rooms and a smoke condition in the Hotel.
The sprinkler system was activated and controlled the fire prior to the Fire Department’s arrival said Fox. Deputy Fire Marshals were called to the scene to investigate the origin and
cause of the fire. The origin of the fire was in a room on the first floor and was caused by an open flame igniting combustibles inside of the room, according to Fox.
Deputy Fire Marshals have arrested Dane Thomas Smith and have charged him with Arson 1st Degree and Felony Criminal Mischief.
No one was injured and the fire caused approximately 15,000 dollars in damage to the building.
