The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District awarded a $45.8 million contract to J.D. Eckman, Inc. to demolish and replace the St. Georges Bridge decking, median barrier, drainage features, and approaches. The work will also involve repairing other structural features of the bridge.
The St. Georges Bridge, which was constructed in 1941 and modified in 2010, is a tied arch structure that spans the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal. It is a major thoroughfare for vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The repairs are necessary to improve its structural condition and traveling surface.
The project is funded by the federal government through Energy and Water appropriations, and work is expected to begin on April 4, 2023. During construction, the bridge will be closed to all traffic for approximately 18 months. Traffic will be detoured to the Senator Roth Route 1 Bridge during this time.
The last major construction project on the St. Georges Bridge was lead paint abatement in 2000–2001.
