The tense standoff involving an armed subject at the Compass at the Grove Apartments in Newark has come to a peaceful resolution as the individual surrendered to law enforcement without incident.
Police said the male subject, who had barricaded himself in an apartment, ultimately relinquished his weapon and was taken into custody by troopers at approximately 4:52 p.m. this afternoon.
The situation unfolded earlier in the day when the armed individual, armed with a handgun, barricaded himself in the apartment complex located in the 1100 block of Compass Way. Law enforcement agencies had sealed off the area and initiated negotiations with the subject. The situation ended without any reported injuries.
The roadways leading to the apartment complex have now been reopened, allowing normal traffic flow to resume.
Earlier, the incident prompted the closure of a sizable area surrounding The Grove, formerly known as the College Square Shopping Center. Residents, businesses, and construction workers in the vicinity experienced disruptions as a result. Nearby residents were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Multiple law enforcement agencies, including specialized tactical teams, were deployed to the scene to handle the situation effectively. The area encompassing the apartments, particularly the road between Marrows Road and Compass Way, saw significant police presence as authorities worked to resolve the standoff peacefully.
The Delaware State Police is expected to release further details about the incident as they become available.
Residents and businesses in the affected area have been allowed to return to their normal routines.
