On Saturday evening, at about 11:24, a Newark Police Officer conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle on South Main Street near Beverly Road.
While the police officer was seated in his vehicle attending to the traffic stop, a 2017 Hyundai, operated by Jack Engelmann, 20, of Newark, struck the rear of the 2016 Newark Police Department Chevrolet Silverado according to police. The Silverado was fully marked and had its emergency lights on at the time of the crash.
Officials said evidence and investigation at the scene determined that Engelmann was under the influence of alcohol. Engelmann was taken into custody without incident and was transported to Newark Police headquarters where he was charged with Driving under the influence of alcohol, Failure to maintain lane, Failure to move over for a stopped emergency vehicle, and Underage possession/consumption of alcohol.
He was released pending a future appearance in Newark Alderman’s Court #40.
The police officer sustained a minor injury that did not require medical attention. Neither Engelmann nor the driver of the originally stopped vehicle were injured.
