A major crash occurred at the intersection of Coastal Highway (Route 1) southbound and Minos Conaway Road in Lewes earlier today.
Just after 9:00 Friday morning, rescue units from the Lewes Fire Department, Sussex County Paramedics, Delaware State Police (DSP) Aviation Trooper 2, and the Rehoboth Fire Company were dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, crews reported a two-vehicle accident with one vehicle off the roadway. Photos from the scene indicate that the accident was a t-bone type accident. Shortly after the initial report, crews requested an additional ambulance and an additional helicopter.
Reports from the scene indicate that a five-year-old child, who was seated in the driver’s side backseat and restrained in a booster seat, sustained injuries and was airlifted to AI DuPont Hospital for Children by Trooper 2. Additionally, a second patient, seated on the passenger side backseat in a car seat, was also transported to AI DuPont via LifeNet helicopter.
There is no current information on any other injuries related to the incident.
As a result of the crash, southbound lanes of Route 1 at Minos Conaway Road are currently closed. Authorities are advising motorists to seek alternative routes and expect delays in the area.
