Just after 7:00 a.m. on Friday morning, an off-duty first responder alerted 911 dispatchers to a serious crash on I-95 southbound. Multiple callers were also reportedly telling dispatchers that several vehicles were involved, blocking most lanes near the Airport Road area.
Crews from Newport’s Minquas Fire Company were the first to arrive on the scene, where they found one person trapped inside a vehicle. Additional units from Christiana Fire Company and the Delaware State Police were also dispatched to the crash.
The crash involved a tractor-trailer, which sustained damage and was leaking fuel across the interstate. HAZMAT teams, along with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), were called to manage the hazardous fuel spill.
The Delaware Department of Transportation (DELDOT) responded to control traffic, while B&F Towing assisted in the removal of the vehicles involved in the crash.
The incident has caused major traffic backups. On the southbound side of I-95, congestion stretched back almost to Frawley Stadium, while onlookers on the northbound side caused delays extending past the mall.
Authorities have yet to release information on the number of patients involved. Further details will be provided as they become available.
As of 8:15 am all lanes remain blocked with motorists getting by on the left shoulder.
