Fire Cop Struck By Vehicle At Accident Scene

The Delaware City Fire Company announced on Tuesday that one of their members was struck by a vehicle while working an accident.

Officials said Fire Police Captain Dennis Layton Sr. was struck by a vehicle while performing traffic control duties. The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 AM at the intersection of Wrangle Hill Road and McCoy Road.

Captain Layton, who has served with the Delaware City Fire Company since 2006, was actively directing traffic when the incident occurred. He was immediately treated on-scene by Delaware City Fire Company EMS and New Castle County Advanced Life Support (ALS) before being transported to a nearby hospital. His current medical condition is stable. The Delaware State Police are investigating the accident and have issued a citation to the driver for inattentive driving according to the department.

Captain Layton, 61 years old, has been a dedicated member of the fire company for 18 years and currently serves as Fire Police Captain. His contributions to the department and the safety of the community have been invaluable added the department.
