On November 24, 2024, the Newark Police Department launched an investigation into a reported shots-fired incident and weapons offense at a local hotel.
Officials said Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Unit determined that a small gathering had taken place in a hotel room in the early hours of the morning. During the gathering, a dispute escalated when Trent Wing, 35, of Newark, Delaware, allegedly produced a firearm and pointed it at a victim. A second victim intervened, resulting in a struggle for control of the weapon. During the altercation, the firearm discharged, striking a hotel room door but causing no injuries. Wing fled the scene with the firearm.
The incident was reported to police later that morning, around 9:30 a.m., though the confrontation was believed to have occurred around 2:00 a.m. Responding to an inquiry from First State Update, Sgt. Jay Conover declined to identify the hotel involved.
FSU has learned that officers responded to the Embassy Suites on South College Avenue at 9:30 a.m. on the same date for an assault incident, however, it’s not clear it this is where the gunfire occurred.
The following day, November 25, 2024, Newark Police SWAT, the Crisis Negotiations Team, and Criminal Investigations Unit executed an operation at Wing’s residence. Wing was taken into custody without incident. He was charged with two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, aggravated menacing, first-degree reckless endangering, and criminal mischief under $1,000. He was arraigned via videophone before Justice of the Peace Court #2 and committed to the Department of Corrections in lieu of a $120,100 cash bond.
