Violent Struggle Leads To Injured County Officer

On December 16, 2024, at 11:14 p.m., officers from the New Castle County Division of Police were dispatched to a disturbance at the Midway Plaza Apartments in the 4800 block of Old Capitol Trail. Reports indicated that an individual was yelling in the hallway and kicking an apartment door.

Officials said upon arrival, an Officer encountered 28-year-old Zachary Yeldell in the hallway. Yeldell immediately became combative, attacking the Officer and striking the Officer in the face and other areas officials said. Despite his violent resistance, the Officer managed to gain control of Yeldell and, with the help of an additional Officer who arrived soon after, successfully apprehended him following a violent struggle. The injured Officer was transported to a local hospital, treated for their injuries, and later released.

Yeldell was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. After being treated and released, he was transported to the New Castle County Police headquarters, where he was charged with One felony count of assault 2nd degree that injures a law enforcement officer, One felony count of resisting arrest with force or violence, One misdemeanor count of resisting arrest, One misdemeanor count of offensive touching of a law enforcement officer, One misdemeanor count of criminal mischief under $1000, and One misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct.

He was arraigned by the Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after failing to pay $8,200 secure bail.
