Arrest Made In Connect With 2021 Newark Hotel Shooting

A suspect tied to a 2021 shooting at the Red Roof Inn in Newark has been taken into custody after a years long investigation. Newark Police Detectives announced today that 25-year-old Abian Plenty of Wilmington was arrested on January 28, 2025.

Officials said Plenty was wanted in connection with the February 6, 2021, incident, where he was seen on surveillance footage fleeing the scene of the shooting with a firearm. A warrant had been issued for his arrest on charges of Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon. After being located by Newark Police, Plenty was processed and arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court #2. He was given $10,000 unsecured bail.

On February 6, 2021, around midnight, Newark Police were called to the Red Roof Inn, located at 1119 South College Avenue, after reports of gunfire. Officers found a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound, who was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.

Just ten days after the shooting, on February 16, 2021, Newark Police, with assistance from New Castle County Police, executed a search warrant at a residence in New Castle. During the operation, 18-year-old Carlos Vasquez was taken into custody without incident. At the time police said investigators believed Vasquez was one of the individuals who fired a gun during the incident. He was charged with Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited, and Reckless Endangering First Degree. Following his arrest, Vasquez was held on $76,000 cash bail and transferred to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington where he remains.
