Man Arrested Following Shooting in Stockdale

CLAYMONT, Del. — A 22-year-old Claymont man has been arrested following a shooting Monday morning in the Stockdale neighborhood, according to the New Castle County Division of Police.

At approximately 8:35 a.m. on July 7, officers responded to the unit block of Palace Avenue for reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers located a 26-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. Officers immediately provided first aid until Emergency Medical Services arrived. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was treated and later released.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Unit responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation. Through investigative efforts, detectives determined that Johnny Washington, 22, was involved in a dispute with the victim prior to the shooting. Authorities allege that during the altercation, Washington retrieved a firearm and fired multiple rounds at the victim.

Police said the victim was standing near a 25-year-old woman and a 3-year-old child at the time of the shooting. Neither the woman nor the child was injured. According to officials, one of the rounds also struck an unoccupied vehicle parked on the roadway.

Following the shooting, police said Washington fled the scene but was quickly located by responding officers and taken into custody without incident.

Washington was transported to New Castle County Police headquarters, where he was charged with two felony counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, one felony count of first-degree assault, one felony count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, one felony count of possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, one felony count of tampering with physical evidence, and one misdemeanor count of criminal mischief over $1,000.

Washington was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $155,000 cash bail.
