Infant Nearly Struck As Car Slams Into House, Driver Pulls Gun

A Middletown man is facing a series of felony and misdemeanor charges after authorities say he crashed into a residence and later threatened bystanders with a firearm early Sunday morning in New Castle County.

According to the New Castle County Division of Police, officers were dispatched at approximately 1:37 a.m. on April 26, 2026, to the 100 block of Bunche Boulevard for a reported vehicle crash involving a home. Responding officers located an unoccupied silver Dodge Charger that had struck both a residence and a parked vehicle.

Investigators identified the driver as 34-year-old Shayron Barksdale of Middletown. He was later located and taken into custody in the 400 block of Carver Drive. Police reported that he exhibited multiple signs of intoxication following his arrest.

The investigation determined that after crashing into the residence, Barksdale was approached by residents attempting to check on his condition. During that interaction, he allegedly produced a handgun and threatened to shoot them before fleeing the scene.

Due to the circumstances, officers, including K9 units, conducted a search of the area. During that search, K9 Indy located a loaded handgun in the backyard of a residence near where Barksdale had been seen fleeing.

Authorities said the impact of the crash caused bricks from the residence to break loose, striking a sleeping occupant and causing minor injuries. Additional debris reportedly landed near a crib containing a sleeping infant, narrowly avoiding further injury.

Barksdale was transported to New Castle County Police Headquarters, where he was charged with multiple felony offenses, including possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm and ammunition by a person prohibited, reckless endangering, criminal mischief, and tampering with physical evidence. He also faces numerous misdemeanor and traffic-related charges, including driving under the influence, vehicular assault, and leaving the scene of a collision.

He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $106,750 cash bail.
