ELKTON, Md. — A 13-year-old girl was killed Thursday morning, October 29, 2026, after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene in Cecil County, according to Maryland State Police.

The victim, a 13-year-old from North East, was transported to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Investigators believe the teenager was walking to school when she was struck.

Shortly before 7:00 a.m., troopers from the Maryland State Police North East Barrack responded to Maryland Route 272 at Rogers Road in Elkton for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. The driver had left the scene before police arrived.

A preliminary investigation determined that a 2011 Mini Cooper was traveling northbound on Route 272 toward the traffic signal at Rogers Road when the girl entered the roadway and was struck.

Approximately 30 minutes after the crash, police located a 2011 Mini Cooper at a nearby business complex, along with its driver. The driver was detained by troopers.

Authorities said charges are pending the outcome of the investigation and consultation with the Cecil County State’s Attorney’s Office. Police have not released the driver’s identity.

Maryland Route 272, North East Road, was closed between U.S. Route 40 and Lums Road for approximately three hours while investigators examined the scene. Personnel from the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration assisted with road closures and detours.
