$145,000 In Untaxed Cigarettes, New York Man Charged

Georgetown – Georgetown Police have arrested a New York man after he was found to be in possession of untaxed cigarettes during a traffic stop in Georgetown, according to Public Information Officer Detective Joey Melvin.

Melvin said that the incident occurred Saturday, March 4, 2017 at approximately 8:07 a.m. Georgetown Police were patrolling Dupont Blvd. when officers observed a gray in color Ford Taurus traveling north bound, commit a traffic violation.

After contacting the operator, the officer learned that the operator’s driver’s license was suspended, said Melvin. A search of the vehicle was conducted in which a large quantity of cigarettes was discovered, according to Melvin.

Melvin said in total, 248 cartons of Marlboro brand cigarettes, 160 cartons of Newport brand cigarettes and 95 cartons of misc. brands of cigarettes were located in the vehicle. Total current street value in New York of the cigarettes confiscated is approximately $145,580, according to Melvin.

Marvin Davis, 51, of Bronx, New York was arrested for three counts of possession of untaxed tobacco, one count of attempting to evade or defeat tax, and traffic violations. Davis was committed to Sussex Correctional Institute in lieu of $12,200 secured bond.
