Newark – On April 5, 2017 Newark Police (NPD) responded to a residential burglary that occurred in the unit block of Academy Street. Officers spoke with two 21-year-old male University of Delaware students who reported that an unknown person entered their residence, possibly through an unlocked door, and removed a gaming system and a laptop computer, according to NPD Spokesman Fred Nelson.

Nelson said officers reviewed surveillance camera footage from the area and observed a subject, believed to be the suspect, entering the residence at 1:31 am. The suspect was observed leaving the residence a short time later and heading towards a vehicle parked nearby.

Officers were able to obtain a vehicle description and registration number for the suspect vehicle by reviewing additional surveillance video. On April 28, 2017 detectives executed a search warrant at the suspect’s, 25-year-old Mark L. Hilaman of Wilmington, residence and recovered some of the stolen items that belonged to one of the victims.

Hilaman was charged with Burglary 2nd Degree and Theft Under $1500 (2 counts) before being video arraigned in front of Justice of the Peace Court 2. He was released on $10,000 unsecured bond.
