Violent Struggle With Trooper Ends With Boyfriend Dead

Pike Creek- The Delaware State Police Criminal Investigations Unit continues to investigate a domestic related shooting involving an off-duty trooper, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Gary Fournier.

Hale said preliminary investigation reveals the incident occurred around 11:12 p.m. Sunday, May 21, 2017, when a 9-1-1 call was received from a residence in the 3200 block of Champions Drive stating shots had been fired in the residence. New Castle County Police and Delaware State Police responded to the address and found an off-duty female trooper severely battered and a male subject (boyfriend) with a gun shot wound to the upper torso.

Troopers learned that the female trooper, an eight year veteran of the Delaware State Police, and the male subject, identified as Maurice Ifill, 43, of Owings Mills, MD, had been involved in a violent physical altercation inside of the home.

At some point during the altercation, the trooper was able to retrieve her service handgun. She then fired the weapon, striking Ifill in the upper torso.

The trooper and Ifill were both treated at the scene by New Castle County Paramedics. They were then transported by ambulance to the Christiana Medical Center where Maurice Ifill was declared dead. His body was then turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Sciences where an autopsy will be performed.

The trooper was admitted to the hospital with serious injuries and is currently in stable condition.

New Castle County Police and Delaware State Police responded to the address and found an off-duty female trooper severely battered and a male subject (boyfriend) with a gun shot wound to the upper torso, according to Fournier. New Castle County Paramedics responded to the scene and transported the two by EMS to Christiana Medical Center where they are currently being treated.

A neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said “that Trooper is a good cop”. “She keeps this neighborhood safe”, added the neighbor.
