Police: Man Abandons 5-Year-Old Child During Police Pursuit

Newark – New Castle County Police (NCCPD) have arrested 28-year-old Malik Brown for resisting arrest and drug offenses in the community of Wellington Woods, according to NCCPD Spokeswoman M/Cpl. Heather Carter.

Carter said on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at about 10:00 a.m., New Castle County Safe Streets detectives received information that Malik Brown was allegedly selling drugs in the community of Wellington Woods. Safe Streets detectives attempted to stop Malik Brown who was driving a red sedan. He then fled in the sedan and Safe Streets detectives found the vehicle moments later in the community of Wellington Woods, said Carter. Malik Brown then fled from police on foot leaving his 5-year-old son in the car, according to Carter.

Malik Brown was taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit, added Carter. The 5-year-old appeared to be unharmed and did not require medical attention.

Malik Brown was observed by detectives discarding 169 capsules of Heroin as he fled, according to a statement released by Carter. Safe Street detectives were able to conduct an administrative search at Malik Brown’s residence which is located in the unit block of Laxford Drive. Detectives located 221 capsules of heroin and $2,948.00 in suspected drug proceeds, said Carter.

Malik Brown was charged with possession with intent to deliver heroin, possession of heroin in a tier 2 quantity, disregarding a police officer’s signal , endangering the welfare of a child by acting recklessly in a manner likely to injure the child, endangering the welfare of a child while committing a drug offense with child present, resisting arrest, driving without a license, aggressive driving, failure to use turn signal, failure to stop at a red light and unreasonable speed .

Malik Brown was arraigned and committed to Howard Young Correctional Institution after failing to post a $25,000.00 secured bond.
