Newark – On Saturday August 5, 2017, at approximately 11:20 p.m. officers were on routine patrol in the College Square Shopping Center when they observed a red Mercedes driving at a high rate of speed into the Library Avenue entrance, according to Sergeant Gerald J. Bryda.

Byrda said the vehicle failed to negotiate the T-intersection and drove over several curbs, becoming disabled in the parking lot with all four tires flattened.

Officers approached the vehicle and it was evident that the driver was intoxicated, said Bryda. The subject was taken into custody after a brief struggle, added Bryda.

The driver was identified as 63-year-old David L. Smith Jr. of Bowie, Maryland.

He was charged with 3rd Offense Driving Under the Influence, Resisting Arrest, Reckless Driving and Failure to Have Required Insurance. Smith was issued $3,500 secured bond and transported to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution.
