North Wilmington – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a serious crash involving a pedestrian that occurred early Saturday evening, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Gary Fournier.

Fournier said preliminary investigation suggests the incident occurred around 8:36 p.m. Saturday July 29, 2017 as an 80-year-old Wilmington man was operating a 2009 Cadillac SRX southbound in the center lane of Concord Pike (US202), south of Fairfax Boulevard. A 35-year-old female pedestrian from Wilmington area, crossed the northbound lanes of SR202 in the area of the Walgreens in Fairfax Shopping Center. The pedestrian then proceeded to enter into the southbound travel lanes of Concord Pike and entered into the path of the Cadillac, said Fournier. The operator of the Cadillac attempted to swerve left to avoid the collision, but was unsuccessful and struck the pedestrian within the center lane of southbound Concord Pike. The pedestrian was thrown into the right travel lane of southbound of US202 where she came to rest. The Cadillac came to a controlled stop immediately after the collision.

The 35-year-old pedestrian, who was not utilizing a marked crosswalk and was wearing dark-colored clothing, was transported by EMS to Christiana Medical Center where she is currently admitted in critical condition. Her name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The 80-year-old operator and a passenger were properly restrained and uninjured in the crash.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident. It is unknown at this time if the pedestrian was under the influence of any alcohol or drugs. Neither impairment or speed appear to be a contributing factor on the part of the operator of the Cadillac. No charges have been filed at this time. Southbound Concord Pike was closed at Fairfax Boulevard for approximately two hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
