Newark Police Charge, Identify Yesterday’s Bank Robbery Suspects

May

Newark –  Just before 1:00 yesterday afternoon, December 11, 2017, Newark Police responded to the TD Bank, located at 230 E Delaware Avenue, for reports of robbery, according to Lt. Fred Nelson.

Nelson said one of the tellers, a 21-year-old female, reported that the suspect approached the counter and presented a demand note. The teller then turned over an undisclosed amount of cash from the bank and the suspect fled the bank.

The Newark Police Department then received information that the suspect may be in the area of Sykes Road in Wilmington Manor, according to Nelson. Newark Officers, assisted by the Delaware State Police and New Castle County Police and and Trooper 4 (Delaware State Police Aviation) subsequently located a blue Acura ATL on Sykes Road and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle.

Officers noted that there was a large amount of cash in plain view on the back seat of the vehicle. Both the driver, David May, 35, of Bear and the passenger, Justin Thompson, 29, of Elkton, were taken into custody without incident, said Nelson.

Officers found that surveillance video of the suspect obtained from the bank was an exact match for Thompson, said Nelson. Detectives also obtained additional information linking May to the robbery.

Both May and Thompson were charged with Robbery 1st Degree and Conspiracy 2nd Degree. They were video arraigned in front of Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to Howard Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $62,000 secured bond.
