Bear Man Charge With DUI After Pedestrian Seriously Injured, Spinal Injuries

Newark – On Sunday February 25, 2018 at 2:08 a.m. the Newark Police responded to the intersection of North College Avenue and Ray Street for a report that a vehicle struck a pedestrian, according to Sgt. Gerald Bryda.

Bryda said the investigation revealed that a 2003 Buick Le Sabre, driven by 23-year-old John Strobel of Bear, was traveling northbound on North College Avenue. The Le Sabre made a left turn onto Ray Street and struck a 19-year-old female pedestrian that had just stepped into the crosswalk, according to Bryda.

The pedestrian sustained serious head, spinal and leg injuries. She was transported to Christiana Hospital by Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company.

Strobel was charged with Driving Under the Influence, Failure to Have Insurance in Possession, Failure to Have Registration in Possession and Civil Possession of Marijuana. Strobel was released pending future court proceedings in the Justice of the Peace Court. The collision investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed. Arrest photo is not available.
