Jeep Into Utility Pole Shuts Down Route 72, Strip Mall

Newark – Just after 5:45 the morning crews from Aetna Hose, Hook, and Ladder, along with University of Delaware Police responded to the intersection of East Chestnut Hill Road (Route 4) and South Chapel Street (Route 72) for reports of wires down.

Upon arrival, crews reportedly found a Jeep that had crashed into a  utility pole, snapping the pole, a truck then caught the wires and pulled them down on top of the truck and the roadway.

Responding crews quickly closed Route 72 in both direction due to the downed wires. They also closed all entrances to Pencader Plaza as they worked to restore power.

Delmarva is reporting that five customers are without power.

At 10:45 am, a BJ’s employee, who answered the phone, said that the store is open and people are getting into the parking lot some how.

At 11:00 am, an employee at the Exxon gas station reported that DelDOT is in the process of removing the cones and that they are back open for business.

No injuries have been reported.

Correction: An earlier version of this story stated that the truck hit the pole. That was incorrect.
