File

Smyrna – An Smyrna Police Officer (SPD) was injured during the pursuit of a fleeing suspect this afternoon, Thursday, April 19, according to police.

Officials said at approximately 1:09 SPD officers responded to assist the Division of Family Services with a home visit in the 500 block of Barley Court.

While on scene, it was determined a male suspect was in violation of a court order. This suspect was further suspected to be in possession of illegal drugs, according to officials.

As officers attempted to take him into custody, he fled on foot. Officials said during the chase, an SPD officer suffered lacerations to his hands from a fence that the suspect jumped over.

SPD officers set up a perimeter in the area and with the assistance of Trooper 4 (Delaware State Police Aviation) and SPD K-9 teams, the suspect was located and taken into custody.

The injured officer was taken to the Bay Health Emergency Room, where he was treated for lacerations and released.

Details will be released including names, charges and bond amounts when they become available.
