Troopers Update This Morning’s Bus Crash On 896, Bus Driver Cited

Bear – The Delaware State Police are investigating a crash involving a school bus that occurred at approximately 6:58 a.m., Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at the intersection of DE 896 southbound at Brennan Blvd., Bear, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Michael Austin.

Austin said the investigation has determined that a 2006 Nissan Sentra, operated by a 17-year-old from Newark, was traveling DE 896 southbound in the left lane approaching the intersection with Brennan Blvd. A 2013 International school bus, operated by a 44-year-old Townsend woman, was stopped in the DE 896 southbound left turn lane at the intersection of Brennan Blvd. The bus changed from the left turn lane into the left thru lane, directly into the path of the Nissan, accoring to Austin. The operator of the Nissan applied his brakes and attempted to veer right to avoid the bus but could not do so and in turn the front left of his vehicle struck the front right side of the bus. Both vehicles came to rest in the DE 896 southbound lanes of travel.

All of the students on the bus, who were from Appoquinimink High School, did not sustain any injuries as a result of the crash, said Austin. The bus driver was transported to the Christiana Hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the Nissan along with a 17 year old passenger were transported to the Christiana Hospital for evaluation.
