Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck By Two Cars In Newark

Last evening, Wednesday, February 6, 2019, at 7:57, Newark Police were dispatched to Woodlawn Avenue, east of Capitol Trail, for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Responding officers found a male pedestrian in the roadway suffering from serious injuries. The pedestrian was treated at the scene by New Castle County Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians from Aetna Hose, Hook, and Ladder Company. He was transported to an to the Trauma Center at Cristiana Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Police are working to confirm the identity of the man.

The Newark Police Department Traffic’s preliminary investigation found that a 2008 Chrysler Sebring, operated by a 51-year-old man, was traveling westbound on Woodlawn Avenue and struck the pedestrian, who was in the middle of the roadway, according to police. After the pedestrian was struck, a second vehicle, a 2009 Kia Spectra, operated by a 58-year-old woman, struck him again. The Kia was traveling eastbound on Woodlawn Avenue. Both vehicles and operators remained at the scene following the crash. Impairment is not believed to be a factor in this crash.

The operator of the Chrysler was also transported to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Woodlawn Avenue, between Capitol Trail and Poplar Avenue, was closed for approximately three hours while officers investigated and cleared the crash.

Breaking Report

Crews from Aetna Hose, Hook, and Ladder, along with Newark Police and New Castle County Paramedics have responded to the intersection of Capitol Trail and Cleveland Avenue for reports of a pedestrian struck.

Reports from the scene are sketchy but it sounds like the pedestrian was seriously injured, possibly killed.

The driver of the striking vehicle suffered an injury to his hand and has been transported to Christiana Hospital.

We’re hearing that a second person may have been injured as a result of this accident. That has not been confirmed.
