Troopers: Worker Killed By Concrete Truck In Lewes

Lewes- The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian and a Freightliner concrete pumper truck that occurred yesterday afternoon, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Melissa Jaffe.

Jaffe said the incident occurred on Tuesday, February 19, 2019, at approximately 12:57 p.m. when a 2016 Freightliner concrete pumper truck was stopped on Hazlett Road within the Governors development which is currently under construction. While the vehicle was stopped, workers with another company began working behind the truck in a sewer with an open manhole cover in the roadway. One worker was in the sewer while the other was standing at the top as a spotter. For unknown reasons, the truck driver failed to observe the spotter near the open manhole cover and the spotter failed to observe the truck backing up, said Jaffe. As a result, the right rear tires struck the pedestrian.

The pedestrian, a 29-year-old male from Georgetown, DE was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification is pending notification of next of kin.

The operator of the truck, a 43-year-old male from Lewes, DE was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision and was not injured, said Jaffe.

This accident continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
