Officials: Escapee That Assaulted Trooper Captured In Bear

Newark, Delaware – The Delaware State Police are seeking the public’s help in locating a 42-year-old New Castle County man after he fled from Troop 2 in Newark this morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:38 a.m. today, Wednesday, April 24, 2019, as Robert D. Burke Jr. of New Castle was arrested on multiple offenses including drug charges, disorderly conduct and an out of state fugitive warrant.

After Burke’s arraignment, he was committed in default of $30,000.00. As the trooper was in the process of transporting Burke to the Howard R. Young Correctional Center, he assaulted the trooper causing minor injuries to the trooper and fled out of the back door to the troop. Troopers are currently conducting a K-9 track. Multiple law enforcement agencies are assisting with the search.

Robert D. Burke Jr. is described as a white male, 5’08” tall and 150 lbs. He was last seen wearing a green hooded sweatshirt (recovered), unknown color of shirt, faded green jeans, brown belt, no shoes unknown color of socks.

The injured Trooper is believed to be a female.

Police have set up a perimeter surrounding the area and are actively searching the woods near the Troop.

The suspect may have been injured during the escape, according to reports from the scene.

Trooper 4 has had to refueled twice so far.

Troopers have found an open gate and are search the yard.

10:28 am Dog has the suspect in the rear of Keene Elementary

10:29 am Troopers asking for an ambulance.

K9 handler was heard screaming over the radio “My dog has him”. I have him behind the elementary school.

Officer asked for a tourniquet and an ambulance.

Ambulance and Trooper 4 have responded back to the scene.

Sounds like the suspect has been transported to the hospital with Troopers accompanying.
