Man Who Shot And Killed Teen Gets 12 Years In Prison

In January of last year, the Delaware State Police responded to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford for a shooting investigation.

On Thursday, January 25, 2018, responding Troopers were notified that a shooting victim, Tavyon M. Sykes, 18 of Greenwood, had been dropped off by a private vehicle and ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The shooting was reported to have occurred at the intersection of Newton Road and Adams Road in Bridgeville at approximately 1:41 p.m.

The next day, Friday, January 26, 2018, Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for suspect Jared C. Mitchell, 31 of Greenwood for Murder 1st degree, two counts of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Reckless Endangering, and two counts Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited.

Mitchell was later found after being arrested on drug charges in Virginia. He was later extradition back to Delaware.

On Friday, May 14, 2019, prosecutors announced that Mitchell pled guilty to Manslaughter, Reckless Endangering First Degree, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony for the killing Sykes.

A Superior Court judge sentenced Mitchell immediately after the plea to 12 years in prison, followed by 6 months of home confinement or work release then 10 years of probation.
